Historical Perspective (Local/National/Regional)

  • As of December 17th, there is still no confirmed case of COVID-19 in the FSM, RMI, and ROP of the Freely Associated States.
  • As of August 17th, there have been cumulative 1,132 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported [516 on Guam; 192 in French Polynesia; 23in New Caledonia; 28 in Fiji; 50 in the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI); and 323 in Papua New Guinea]. A total of 11 deaths have been reported [1 in Fiji, 3 in PNG, 5 in Guam, and 2 in CNMI]. In Hawaii, the total number of confirmed cases is 4,825 with 40 deaths.
  • August 5-7, Pohnpei State conducted its 2nd repatriation readiness assessment (SimEx 2).
  • August 4, National Comprehensive COVID-19 Guidelines endorsed (i.e. Social Distancing, Repatriation)
  • July 24, Amendment to Pohnpei State COVID-19 Emergency Declaration to allow repatriation of stranded citizens, human remains, and up to 5 attendants.
  • July 22, Kosrae State conducted its 2nd repatriation readiness assessment (SimEx 2).
  • July 14-16, Kosrae State conducted its 1st repatriation readiness assessment (SimEx 1).
  • July 10, Congressional Resolution 21-175, allowing the repatriation of stranded citizens; with rare exemptions.
  • June 17-19, Pohnpei State conducted its 1st repatriation readiness assessment (SimEx 1).
  • April 25th, FSM received NOA for COVID-19 supplemental funding ($467,114) from US CDC for epidemiology and lab capacity.
  • April 24th, FSM National Taskforce and partners endorsed the Pacific Humanitarian Team COVID-19 Response Plan and decided for the initial funding of $300,000 from the UN through this plan to go towards water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
  • Donations of PPE’s from China Embassy has been distributed and divided equally amongst the FSM States [Protective disposable clothing – 480, Infrared Thermometer -80, Protective goggles-400, surgical gloves-400, shoe gloves-400, and masks (KYOWA Shipping donations) – 6,400].
  • April 20th FSM National and Pohnpei State Taskforces met to discuss greater cooperation in implementation of response measures on COVID-19 under the recently extended National Public Health Emergency Declaration and 3rd Amendment to the Pohnpei State Constitutional Emergency Order No. 20-01.
  • April 19th, pending lab results for 3 clients in isolation (2 PUI’s / 1 TB Suspect) at Yap State Hospital came back negative for COVID-19.
  • April 18th, all FSM States received their Abbot ID Now Covid-19 test-kits. A draft testing algorithm is in draft to be shared with the states. Reagents for Covid-19 GeneXpert is still in route.
  • April 17th, FSM Congress extended the National Public Health Emergency Declaration until May 31, 2020, emphasizing on harmonization with State declarations, social distancing measures within the next 30 days[https://gov.fm/index.php/public-info/fsm-pio].
  • April 17th National Taskforce held first dialogue with UN Partners (WHO, IOM, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP, GEF SGP, Enhancing Disaster and Climate Change, and SDG Localization), SPC and PIHOA to enhance collaboration in response to COVID-19.
  • On April 16th Pohnpei Governor Reed Oliver signed 3rd amendment to Constitutional Emergency Order No. 20-01 providing exemption for emergencies or unforeseen circumstances caused by accidents [https://www.facebook.com/PohnpeiStateGov/].
  • FSM and Partners (WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, IOM, CDC, PIHOA, SPC, etc) continue to provide assistance to all 4 FSM States in building their readiness and capacity for surveillance & early detection, risk communication, infection control, quarantine, isolation, contact tracing, case management, and laboratory testing.
