COVID-19 Surveillance

FSM utilizes the existing flu-surveillance system to monitor possible Covid-19 outbreak in the FSM. The Nationalized Electronic Health Record (EHR) was recently installed in all the Government Hospital in the FSM. Chuuk Hospital completed installation in March 2020. With the EHR, patients with these symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose, etc., can be identified and counted. Patients with these symptoms requiring admissions can also be identified and classified as SARI cases. (Syndrome- a group of symptoms which consistently occur together, or a condition characterized by a set of associated symptoms (i.e., fever, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, etc)

•ILI (Influenza-like Illnesses)

•SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses) – requiring admission. Special emphasis on monitoring SARI during this pandemic since the likelihood of Covid-19 presenting as SARI

•Port of Entry (POE) Screening

Once laboratory capacity are enabled for Covid-19, we will be able to monitor suspected and confirmed cases by dates while also continued with syndromic surveillance. Additional charts for laboratory screening may be required.
